This item dates to around 1860 when the mammies took care of the babieson the plantation. The baby was layed behind the rail so there was no dangerof falling while the mammies snapped beans or shelled peas or whateverand rocked the baby to sleep. The genuine antique mammy bench rockeris very hard to find, most are reproductions. There is one on ebay now thatlooks exactly like this one priced at $1500.00.
