Purvis Young: Funeral for Two 17H x 25W Hard to Photograph Mediums See Below COA

Location:
Deerfield Beach, FL
Description:

First off, please understand, when a painting has so many different surfaces and mediums it becomes very difficult to photograph. What I did here was take pictures on a black background and then a white background. The canvas that the painting is on, like all of the paintings in my Purvis Young collection, is very old. When Purvis glued these canvases to a wood board they were not stretched like a regular professional canvas painting would be stretched. Also, because of age the paint you will see some places where the paint is chipped. The white color above greenish grey casket is left white intentionally by Purvis to represent the spirit if the deceased going up to heaven. The frame is made from different kinds of scrap wood, and it also was difficult to get the colors right. The top of the frame hasred paint across it, the right side is yellow, the bottom right has grey paint on it, blending with the grey figures. The left bottom is burgundy color with gray-ish color as well. The left side is all burgundy but has deep impression marks n the wood. The funeral procession is a celebration of life, that is why the figure at the right has hands up and of two colors.Purvis always painted his life around him. Whenever you look at a painting of his you can be sure that this happened in his life. Also, you may not realize this, but making these frames was extremely complicated. Finding the right size and material that can work as a frame. Sawing or cutting to fit. Having the colors blend. Attaching it to the material that the painting was done on. Every piece of a handmade frame was very time consuming and difficult for him. Therefore, paintings that have a handmade frame are more expensive than paintings without the handmade framePLEASE NOTEI am not a professional photographer. The colors look lighter and darker in different lighting situations. Sometimesthe photo looks a bit blue or a bit yellow, and even pink. Some paintings I need to lighten or darken to show you details that my camera, or lighting, does not capture. I do edit all photos because I want to make sure you can seewhat I see. However, all paintings, are edited and may look different upon arrival. Your lighting will alsochange the colors, dark or light, as well.No returns on Auctions or Offers Accepted Color Symbolisms:You will see Purvis' symbolisms in the particular colors he uses and where it is placed. He has a meaning, a story he is telling you, in every aspect of a painting, or drawing. Sometimes his paint or colors look happenstance, or 'Pollack'- like in that the paint is splashed around. Yes, he did paint with splashes and other unconventional manners of painting He was still studying other famous painters. He was self taught and was always experimenting in his works. Each painting tells an entirely different story. The colors used are to bring your eye to a starting point for the story. Where those colors are showing in the painting, your eye moves with that color to another place,as well as the subjects and the action. He will have a very busy painting, as you look at it you will automatically look at the'subject' of the painting. But, looking closer, you will see 'one' color on a side of the painting..that color is only in one other spot on the painting, usually on the other side or top and bottom, and that is something to pay attention to. He wants you to understand what that color 'means' in that spot and what, and why, it has to do with that same color in the other spot on the other side of the work. He is leading your eye each place for you to 'see' the story. There are certain colors that just when I believe will have the same meaning in every painting, I realize that I am wrong. Red, for instance, is not always blood. It can mean all sorts of things. If there is no reason to have 'blood' in that scene, the 'red' may mean 'vices' or 'drugs' or 'anger' or 'a cause'.The color white is used a lot to mean 'ascension', but not always. In ascensionthe white color will start where a death could have happened, and then upwards to heaven. He will show ascension for the Freedom Horses too. But, white is not always used in the manner I just explained.Every painting can take on several meanings depending on what 'you' see. Not me. This is my opinion about the colors. You may find every time you look at the same painting you will see something different happening that you did not notice before. Or, you will meet another Purvis collector and find that the symbolism, in their eyes, is totally different that what you have determined to be the symbolism in the same scene.
