1940s Taxco Mexico Impressionist Landscape Reynaldo Maya Town ViewThe painting is an oil on canvas and measures 16 X 20 inches. The painting is signed "Maya" in the lower left corner. There is some paint loss around the edges of the painting. There is old staining on the back of the canvas that does not affect the image in any way. Please see all my photos for condition. No frame.. Reynaldo Maya was born in 1911 in San Miguel Topilejo, near Mexico City. His paintings have been on display in Paris, Madrid and Mexico City as well as the US. In Madrid, Maya was presented a silver medal for his work. Maya is the son of a sarape weaver. He began painting at five, and when he was in grammar school, he illustrated lessons on the blackboard for both students and teachers. His paintings are of rural Mexico landscapes and character studies. Source: El Paso Herald (Newspaper) (El Paso, Texas) 01 Jul 1947. "Thus arose three new Open Air Schools, directed by former students of Alfredo Ramos Martinez from the Coyoacan school; in Tlalpan, Francisco Diaz de Leon; in Xochimilco, Rafael Vera de Cordova, and in Villa de Guadalupe, Fermin Revueltas. It was precisely in Xochimilco that students like Reynaldo Maya emerged. Maya’s talent was recognized from a very early age and as an adult he was a teacher at the Taxco Outdoor School where he had the largest of his Production. The art he produced was mainly collected by American visitors to the famous silversmith town of Taxco. His style captures the light that without a doubt, reflects an impressionistic touch.
